IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR PARENTS
OF CHILDREN FOR BAPTISM IN 2025
Dear Parents / Guardians,
We are blessed with parents who bring their children for the Sacrament of Baptism to this Church.
We have a wonderful group of people on our Baptism Team who present a preparation course for the parents / guardians.
For one reason or another parents / guardians are sometimes unable to make the preparation course on the Tuesday evenings before their child’s Baptism on the Saturday evening.
Therefore, from January 2025 we have decided that parents attend the preparation course first and on completion they can then book their Baptism in the Office.
PLEASE NOTE:
Preparation course takes place
on the fourth Tuesday of the month @ 6pm.
Baptisms take place
on the fourth Saturday of the month @ 4pm.
Preparation for Baptism
Parents wishing to have their baby baptized in St. Brigid’s Parish are encouraged to reflect on this important decision for their child’s life.
Baptism calls for a lifelong commitment to living a life of faith as well as living as a member of the Church.
To help prepare for the sacrament parents of a child for baptism will receive a short visit from two members of the Baptism Team to answer any questions concerning the baptism and to help with the filling in of the Baptismal Form.
An invitation will be issued to the parents to attend a short input on baptism in Seomra Bhríde the previous Tuesday evening at 6pm
Ceremony of Baptism
The Sacrament of Baptism is of it's very nature a communal sacrament. Therefore parishes today are discouraged from providing individual baptisims whatever the circumstances.
Communal Baptisim is the practice in St. Brigid's.
Two or at the most three babies are baptized during each Baptismal Ceremony in the Parish.
Where possible parents are strongly encouraged to have children baptized in the parish into which the baby is born.
Parents and Godparents
Parents wishing to have their child baptized in the St Brigid’s Parish must be able to bring up their child in the faith. This means that at least one parent must have (a) an understanding of the faith into which their child is being baptized, (b) be baptized themselves (c) ideally live out that faith as a member of the Church.
In choosing Godparents for your child, parents should reflect on what this role means and choose a person of faith as a Godparent for your child. At least one of the Godparents must be baptized.
Baptismal Certificates
Certificates of proof of Baptism are available from the:
Church Office between 11.00am and 2.00pm on Wednesday, Thursday & Friday.
