Preparation for Baptism

Parents wishing to have their baby baptized in St Brigid’s Parish are encouraged to reflect on this important decision for their child’s life. Baptism calls for a lifelong commitment to living a life of faith as well as living as a member of the Church.

To help prepare for the sacrament parents of a child for baptism will receive a short visit from two members of the Baptism Team to answer any questions concerning the baptism and to help with the filling in of the Baptismal Form. An invitation will be issued to the parents to attend a short input on baptism in Seomra Bhríde (room beside Parish Office) on the following Monday.

Ceremony of Baptism (Communal)

The practice of individual baptisms was never a good practice as the Sacrament of Baptism is of its very nature a communal sacrament. This undesirable practice developed at a time when there was more than one priest in a parish and could accommodate this practice. Communal Baptism is the only way forward and is the practice in St Brigid’s. Two or at most three babies will be baptized during one Baptismal Ceremony in the Parish.

Parents and Godparents

Parents wishing to have their child baptized in the St Brigid’s Parish must be able to bring up their child in the faith. This means that at least one parent must have (a) an understanding of the faith into which their child is being baptized, (b) be baptized themselves (c) ideally live out that faith as a member of the Church.

In choosing Godparents for your child, parents should reflect on what this role means and choose a person of faith as a Godparent for your child. At least one of the Godparents must be baptized.

Baptismal Certificates

Certificates of proof of Baptism are available from the Parish Office between 10.00am and 2.00pm Monday to Thursday and until1.30pm on Friday.
