Preparation for Baptism

Parents wishing to have their baby baptized in St. Brigid’s Parish are encouraged to reflect on this important decision for their child’s life. Baptism calls for a lifelong commitment to living a life of faith as well as living as a member of the Church.

To help prepare for the sacrament parents of a child for baptism will receive a short visit from two members of the Baptism Team to answer any questions concerning the baptism and to help with the filling in of the Baptismal Form. An invitation will be issued to the parents to attend a short input on baptism in Seomra Bhríde the previous Tuesday evening at 6pm

Ceremony of Baptism

The Sacrament of Baptism is of it's very nature a communal sacrament. T

herefore parishes today are discouraged from providing individual baptisims whatever the circumstances.

Communal Baptisim is the practice in St. Brigid's.

Two or at the most three babies are baptized during each Baptismal Ceremony in the Parish.

Where possible parents are strongly encouraged to have children baptized in the parish into which the baby is born.

Parents and Godparents

Parents wishing to have their child baptized in the St Brigid’s Parish must be able to bring up their child in the faith. This means that at least one parent must have (a) an understanding of the faith into which their child is being baptized, (b) be baptized themselves (c) ideally live out that faith as a member of the Church.

In choosing Godparents for your child, parents should reflect on what this role means and choose a person of faith as a Godparent for your child. At least one of the Godparents must be baptized.

Baptismal Certificates

Certificates of proof of Baptism are available from the:

Church Office between 11.00am and 2.00pm on Wednesday, Thursday & Friday.
